Irritability

Irritability

Hormonal changes affect key neurotransmitters in the brain such as GABA (relaxation), dopamine (pleasure), norepinephrine (energy) and serotonin (mood).

When oestrogen and progesterone levels drop, these substances also fluctuate, triggering symptoms such as irritability and mood swings.

Is it normal?

Of course! During perimenopause and menopause, irritability, sadness, anxiety and anger — or jumping from one emotion to another — are completely normal.

52% of women in menopause experience irritability.

What can you do?

  • Breathe and take mindful pauses when you feel irritability
    rising.
  • Write down what you feel — putting it into words helps you manage it.
  • Talk to friends or seek support — sharing the load lightens it.
  • Take care of your rest and nutrition — they affect your mood more than
    you might think.
  • Consult a professional — there are solutions to balance your emotions.
